The Second Coming of iPad 2
So it is official, the iPad 2 is coming to a store near you on March 25th and with the amazing success of the first generation, it looks set to change the way tablet PCs work all over again.
Not often does a product take the entire world by storm, but Apple certainly has a knack of making everyone sit up and listen. Over the last nine months Apple has sold over 15 million iPads – a truly staggering amount considering that fact that 10 months ago tablets were heading the way of the dodo into extinction.
Rackspace’s Robert Scoble was at the launch on Wednesday and was able to get his hands on the new device to test drive its features and potential. (see his video diary here). The main reason for the iPad’s success so far has been without doubt its ‘cool factor’! The iPad also opens up for individuals to engage in an entirely new way of computing whilst on the move (i.e. streaming videos, reading books, music downloads etc), not to mention the fact that it is the only tablet to have over 35,000 apps available to download.
It is the existence and proliferation of these apps which have propelled the iPad to its dizzy heights and made it such a worldwide success across both the business and consumer world. Who can honestly say that they haven’t played the Angry Birds game or knows somebody who is addicted to the game for example?
For those not already familiar, Rackspace has an app currently available for download which allows users to easily and quickly administer cloud servers on the go. Whilst it’s not a complete replacement for our browser-based control panel or APIs, it does allow for some powerful remote administration capabilities and opens a whole new world up to our customers.
We already know that cloud computing is changing the way we access data, and there is an undeniable trend for both corporate and consumer access to data to be carried out on the move from mobile devices including laptops, netbooks, smartphones and, of course, tablet PCs.
With people no doubt already starting to queue to get their hands on the iPad 2, one thing is for sure, it will be exciting to see how businesses harness its new capabilities and push it to the max.
